What is Nobrow Cartoons and Nobrow Illustration? And what is that clicking machine by your keyboard?

Nobrow Cartoons is Mark Heath's site for selling single-panel humor. Nobow Illustration is where I display my work and wait for a phonecall.  I call my business Nobrow because of my drawing style. I often leave out the foreheads.  It cuts down on the overhead.

The clicking machine is Dr. Mueller's Panoptical Engine. It's a digital recreation of a clockwork entertainment device that was popular in Mark Twain's time. It's essentially a cartoon generator.

How do I buy a cartoon?

Add your cartoon(s) to the shopping cart, hit submit, and an instant later you'll receive your receipt and a link for downloading a high resolution image (300 dpi jpeg.) I'll send along an invoice.

Do you offer Paypal?

Not at the moment.

How secure is the shopping cart?

Customer names are filed, but I don't share them.

How often can I use the cartoon?

Unless we've made other arrangements, you can use the image once, for its intended purpose. But in accordance with the Refrigerator Rule, you can share the cartoon with your friends, or post it on any non-commercial blog, as long as you include a link back to nobrowcartoons. I continue to own the copyright.

Can I own the copyright?

Owning copyright is like owning a car. Unless you're planning to drive it into the ground, it's cheaper to lease. For most customers, with a single destination in mind — a newsletter, a calendar, et al. — buying a specific one-time use will get them where they need to go.

What was that Refrigerator Rule you mentioned?

Before the internet, the refrigerator was the favored site for showing clipped cartoons to family and friends. You're welcome to do the same thing online. Think of your blog as a refrigerator door. As long as your blog or site doesn't promote a business, or exist for profit, you can show the cartoon. This is also known as a Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License.

What if my cartoon doesn't download?

I'll email your cartoon directly to you.

What if I buy the cartoon and decide not to use it.

All sales are final. But if you decide that another cartoon would work better, exchanges are available.

What if I don't see the right cartoon(s)?

Drop me a line. Tell me what you need. Presto [with presto defined as anywhere between 2 days and 2 weeks.] I'll show you several ideas, then finish the cartoon you select. The rate for custom work is, of course, higher, but still reasonable.

I'd like to use the cartoon for a use not mentioned.

Text books, t-shirts, ads, infinitum. Tell me what you have in mind. All things are possible. Email me directly for a quote.

I have a complete set of rods and cones. Can I get a cartoon in color?

Absolutely.  Coloring is an additional fee; usually $100. But the color green is free.

What if I don't understand a cartoon? Will you explain the punchline?

Some things are mysteries, and should be savored for their mystery, not explained. If a cartoon isn't funny, think of it as a Zen koan, a contradiction designed to free your mind.

Free of charge.
